Tips on using Internet:
1).Use a reputed browser e.g. Internet Explorer version 6.0 (at least)
2).Use the latest version that supports secure transactions
3).Update the browser with the latest patch from the respective authorized browser sites
4).Install a reputed licensed anti virus software and regularly update it with the latest definitions
5).Do not ever click on a link that you get through email specially for shopping or financial sites; go the concerned site by typing the correct address on to the web browser and access that site
6).Install reputed personal firewalls specially when you use broadband connection; (Broadband connection-> the connection to the internet is always on e.g. through cable or leased line unlike dialup where you connect to the internet by connecting through normal telephone lines; Firewall -> in brief is usually a software used that can specify which are the sites that are allowed to be accessed or denied; this will help in further protecting your computer
7).Do not use public PCs to access important internet sites or conduct online shopping
8).Do not give your password or pin to any person
9).Do not randomly allow any person to access your computer
10).Do not install any kind of unlicensed or pirated software
11).Do not open email or its attachment from any unknown person; be careful with attachments even from known person
12).If you use broadband connection do not share your computer or keep the connection live when you do not need internet
13).Do your shopping only from reputed merchants
14).When you do your online shopping always ensure that the website begins with https and not http
15).Check the website of merchants to ensure that the certificate is current before doing your shopping
16).Make your payment only through reputed financial institutions
17).Always logout after using online email or shopping or financial transaction
18).Always use highest security option when you use online email
19).Always choose password or username that are not easily available e.g. you must not use your date of birth, spouse name, telephone number or city of birth
20).Do check the degree of online security used by the financial institution e.g. does it use 128 bit SSL
21).Immediately inform your bank about change in your address or email id
22).Go through terms of use of any site specially those that you use regularly
23).Do not share your computer with any other person and if you do want to share, please ensure that such sharing is password protected
24).Do not reply to, or click on links within, emails or pop-up messages that ask for sensitive information such as passwords, debit card numbers, credit card numbers etc
25).Do regularly update your browsers such as internet explorer or mozilla firefox with authorised patches directly from respective websites.
26).Do shred, or otherwise destroy, all documents with personal information prior to disposal.
Do monitor your bank account and credit card statment/account at frequent intervals and if any incorrect transaction is recorded the same to be checked with the concerned organisation immediately
27).Do not email sensitive information such as your credit card number, debit card number, passwords, etc.
28).Always keep a separate record of contact numbers as well as details of your sensitive information such as debit/credit card numbers so that you can immediately report loss of cards or misuse of cards
